Method: Practice the following pattern 10 times per day, during 2 different training sessions, in different locations AND with different distractions. Dog is on an elevated Place Stool or Training Table.
Training Pattern: Have "collar high and snug", "fold back" so your right thumb is close to your dogs right ear. Command "Fetch" as dowel is presented at dogs lips. Maintain keeping the dowel close to dogs mouth until dog opens its mouth. If dog refuses with clenched teeth, do the 'brushing the dogs teeth' mechanic until dog open mouth and takes dowel. Once dowel is in dogs mouth, release collar pressure and do Conditioned Relaxation Stroke* until dogs head relaxes forward and you can feel they have relaxed. *IF dog has not relaxed with dowel in its mouth and its head keeps going up, then 'cage' the jaw and use the left hand two fingers closest to your left thumb to put slight downward pressure on top of dogs nose. Use "Easy" as a way to communicate to the dog to relax. Once the dogs head drops forward and you feel they have relaxed, that is the moment to command "Give" and take the dowel out of dogs mouth, parallel to the ground and away from dogs eyesight. Dowel lives under your right armpit when you are not presenting it or taking it away from your dog.
