A place to learn a new language, the Koehler Method of Dog Training, which is an entire language of communication between owner(s) and their dog. Let the journey begin.
1) Don't move at all once you send Sofie to "Fetch". Either she will or she won't. If she does anything except launch promptly with immediate pickup, then you snub back the leash (meaning simply close your fist on the leash), then be 'impending doom' getting on her 2 ears. Expect her to fight you. Win this battle and you win the war on who is in control of Sofie's mouth, her speed, her pickup, and her thoroughness in obeying a very well-known command. Lose this battle and you lose the war as she will be in control, and you'll have a 'Battle of the Dumbbell' in the future. Far, Far, FAR easier to win now so she believes you 100%. She is to move forward to follow the very well-known command of "Fetch" on her initiative, WITHOUT you moving forward at all. That moving forward was necessary when we started the Placed Retrieve, it should no longer be used as Sofie is past the need for this crutch. 2) Follow the sequence in the Lesson 10 Chair Test. * DB is handed to seated person, seated person places db on ground between ankles. * DB is handed to seated person, seated person then places db between calves. * DB is handed to seated person, seated person then places between their knees. * DB is handed to seated person, seated person then places db on top of their knees (legs closed) * DB is handed to seated person, seated person places db on ground to right or left of chair * DB is handed to seated person, seated person then places db on the other side of chair * DB is handed to person, person places behind of underneath their chair (making sure dog has the ability to reach their db)
You are unconsciously 'guiding' Sofie to where she needs to be. You are handicapping her, please don't 'help' her. Let her rubber- neck, have the children or other distractions wander about. Sofie is responsible to pay attention to YOU, regardless of the distractions. No exceptions. So, set this up again, let her fail to pay attention (and she will fail), and when she casually moves towards db, you stop her forward careless, sluggish or slow movement, get on her ears and insist she obey doing what we have taken months to train her to do - retrieve on command.
Yes, it all makes sense. I just don't know how long to wait for her to be given the chance to retrieve the DB. If she is going toward it, I feel that if I EC her then she will regress. I will trust you that you want her to launch quickly and fetch quickly and if she doesn't then I'll snub the leash and EC her. Got it. Thanks!! Nancy
