HOMEWORK Week 4: Stand/Stay Circles

Here is one way to help a dog succeed and learn that Stand/Stay means Stand/Stay as you circle the dog.

Working on a natural boundary like this curb makes it clearer to the dog the best choice is to remain in the position until commanded to do otherwise.

You will notice in the video, I pretend Sugar has moved and I lightly tap his belly to help him maintain his Stand/Stay position.

  1. Nancy,

You should be in heel position, standing up tall and straight facing the same direction as the dog is facing. Then, do the 'set' which is the downward pressure, lightly, on the dogs' withers so the dog pushes up against it (see first video). Then command, "Stay" give stay hand signal, and move around the dog with NO leash pressure of any kind. When you are done with your circles, come up beside the dog into heel position with your RIGHT foot, then close with your LEFT foot (see first video). This bit of finesse is because the last command issued was "Stay" and if you come up beside your dog when your circles are complete with the LEFT foot, the dog sees the LEFT foot moving and assumes, rightly so, that it is to move. So, to stabilize the learning dog, when returning to them from behind, to get back to heel position (left side of your pant leg by dogs right shoulder), AND TO KEEP THEM IN THE LAST POSITION THEY WERE TOLD TO "STAY" at, step up beside their right shoulder with your RIGHT foot, then close with your left foot. This seemingly tiny bit of finesse helps a learning dog maintain its position, "Stay", because the footwork communicates to do so. Then do an EF. Make sense?

  2. But I am very short so it is very hard to circle around her while holding leash to the right of her race and stroke her without bending down. I'll try to stand tall and end with my right foot and close with left, is that my EF? Or do I still need to do EF?
