Just wanted to encourage you as I remember Longe Line was initially, 11+ years ago, VERY confusing for me. Now, I love it as it trains the learning dog to choose to pay attention, to bond with the handler (silently), and the learning dog experiences comfort when it makes a wise choice. NOTHING else I have seen in ALL the other dog training methods trains a dog to choose wisely except Longe Line work done well. LL work IS the foundation for Loose Leash heeling and LL work IS the foundation for Off-Leash heeling. AND it IS the foundation that layers into a dog's mind the belief that the dog gets to choose and wise choices are the BEST choices.
